Natural zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals, containing alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, with a framework-like structure with interconnected cavities. Occupied by large metal cations and water molecules, it is a three-dimensional tetrahedral framework. Synthetic zeolites are called molecular sieves. Silicon (or aluminum)-oxygen rings can form different cage structures, and different types of molecular sieves can be formed from different numbers and types of cages. Molecular sieve is a hydrated aluminosilicate crystal. Due to the different Si/Al ratio in the molecule, there can be A, X, Y and mordenite type molecular sieves. Molecular sieves have acid-base centers and can be used for acid-base catalysis reactions, which are zeolite (or molecular sieve) catalysts. Also famous is ZSM-5 molecular sieve catalyst. It is widely used in petroleum processing such as catalytic cracking and industrial processes such as separation, recovery, drying and dehydration of gases and liquids.
